How to Fix Sonos Speaker Not Working After Failed System Update

Sonos speakers are popular for a reason, but just like other devices they aren’t perfect. They can stop working out of the blue, especially after installing a firmware update.

Why Do Sonos Speakers Stop Working After an Update?

Your Sonos smart speaker may stop functioning after an update because of several reasons:

  • There was an error during the update.
  • The update stopped midway.
  • The update didn’t download completely.
  • There was an internet connection issue.

Whatever the cause for this issue may be, here are the steps to follow to fix your Sonos speaker device.

How to Troubleshoot Updating Issues & Fix Sonos Speaker Not Working After Failed System Update

Update your Sonos Device Again

Use the Sonos app to update the audio device again with the following steps:

  1. Launch the Sonos controller app you are using.
  2. Click on More to proceed to the Settings menu.
  3. Scroll down and look for the Software Update option.
  4. Click on it for Sonos to start checking for available updates.
  5. Install the available updates.

Restart the WiFi Router or Modem Device

Rebooting your router might be necessary before you update your Sonos again if it stopped working after the first update. A new IP address is often assigned to your device after an update, and your router might not detect it sometimes.

Your Sonos will no longer receive a proper network, which causes it to stop functioning. If a reboot doesn’t fix the issue, you can reset the router instead.

Sonos speakers, just like smartphones, also require a restart or reboot after a system update is installed. Follow the steps below to restart your Sonos speaker:

  1. Unplug the power adapter of your device from the power source.
  2. Plug it back again after 10 to 20 seconds.
  3. Wait for 2 minutes as the device reboots and connects to the internet.
  4. Your Sonos speaker is back online again once the top white light on its control panel lights up.
  5. Check the Sonos app to rerun the update.

Place the Smart Speaker Near the Router

Sonos speakers may sometimes fail to update or work after an update because of network issues. Problems may occur after or during the update if the speaker has a poor WiFi signal. To fix it, you can place the speaker near your router.

Disconnect any other devices connected to the router and connect your speaker first to the network. Doing so will give your speaker better access to the available bandwidth. Try to update your Sonos speaker again to fix the problem.

Check the Router Settings

Check your router settings if none of the solutions above worked. Some settings might prevent a smooth update of your Sonos speaker, such as firewall settings, parental controls, and other similar controls.

Reinstall your Sonos Controller App

You can also try to uninstall and reinstall your Sonos controller app to solve the problem with your speaker. Although it isn’t a sure fix, you might be able to fix the issue with this. Simply uninstall the app from your smartphone, download and install it once again. Go to Sonos app settings and update the system again.

If your Sonos speaker stops working after an update, there are several simple steps you can take to fix the issue. You can try to update the device again, restart the router, restart your speaker, place the speaker near your router, check your router settings, and reinstall the Sonos controller app.
