How to Watch YouTube on Third-Generation & Older Apple TV Devices

Apple TV allows you to install and access streaming services and other apps like YouTube. Unfortunately, Google discontinued YouTube support to third-generation Apple TV devices. Older Apple TV set-top boxes including the 3rd generation is no longer supporting the App Store. The second generation device does not have the App Store at all, so, you’re out of luck installing the official YouTube app from there as well. Without the App Store, you cannot install or upgrade the YouTube app.

If you are using the third-generation and below Apple TV to watch your favorite YouTube channel, there is still a way for you to do so.

Apple introduced the third-generation Apple TV in 2012. It comes with a WiFi connection, HDMI port, Micro-USB, and optical digital audio. Now, Apple launched its latest Apple TV models, the Apple TV 4K (fifth generation) and Apple TV HD (5th gen). Users can enjoy color balance technology, high frame rate HDR, and Siri Remote. Apple TV HD (4th generation) is also still available in the market and still supports Youtube TV natively. Both devices uses tvOS and has a built-in App Store.

While Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K sound promising, it is not a reason for the sudden upgrade from your Apple TV 3rd generation if YouTube is only your issue. With the workaround indicated below, you can still stream your YouTube videos without upgrading your set-top box.

How to Stream YouTube Videos on 3rd Generation Apple TV or Older using AirPlay

If you launch the YouTube app on your 3rd or 2nd generation Apple TV, you will see the error message saying that it is no longer supporting the app:

“YouTube only works with AirPlay on this device
The YouTube app is no longer available on Apple TV (3rd generation). You can still watch YouTube on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, iPhone or iPad. With AirPlay, you can also stream YouTube from your iOS device directly to any Apple TV (3rd generation or later). For a list of supported devices, please visit yt.be/tv-devices.”

However, Apple suggests that you can still watch YouTube on your Apple TV through AirPlay.

AirPlay enables you to share your screen from your Apple device to your Apple TV. So, you just need to launch the YouTube app on your Mac computer, iPhone or iPad tablet and cast or mirror your video content to your 3rd generation Apple TV via AirPlay.

Use and Connect AirPlay on Older Apple TV Devices

To use AirPlay on your Apple TV, make sure both devices connect to the same WiFi network. Open the YouTube app on your iOS device and play the video you want to stream. Then, tap the screen during playback and select the TV streaming icon. Choose AirPlay & Bluetooth Devices. Connect it to your 3rd generation Apple TV.

That’s it! You may need to use two devices to watch YouTube on your Apple TV, but it is worth the effort. Try the method and see if it works for you. Otherwise, it is better to upgrade to a newer Apple TV model.
